An Introduction to Thermoplastic Vulcanizates

Thermoplastic vulcanizates (TPVs) are essential materials in manufacturing and production industries due to their versatility and adaptability across a wide range of specialty chemical applications. TPVs boast the processing ease of thermoplastics with the flexibility and durability of rubbers. The unique material characteristics of TPVs allow for a vast spectrum of mechanical and physical properties, making them useful across a bevy of applications including automotive components, construction materials, electrical insulation, and medical devices[1].

The power of thermoplastic vulcanizates comes from their unique crosslinking process, which incorporates a catalyst in the reaction. Stannous chloride dihydrate, especially in the form of our specialty blends, serves as this cornerstone catalyst, influencing the structure of the resultant TPV and its properties[2].

Catalysts for Thermoplastic Vulcanizates

REAXIS®C154S PLUS, as the name implies, builds on the powerful foundation of REAXIS®C154S. Still boasting the high metal content stannous tin’s versatile nature, it’s also employed in multiple reactions. The difference is in the ‘Plus.’ This enhanced, stable, and free-flowing blend of stannous chloride dihydrate and silica further refines the crosslinking process of thermoplastic elastomers, delivering a more robust and resilient material.

Stepping away from silica, REAXIS®C154T employs talc in its formulation. The stannous chloride dihydrate and talc blend creates a versatile, high metal content stannous tin. As a catalyst , REAXIS® C154T significantly speeds up the crosslinking process. The result is a superior thermoplastic elastomer that stands up to intense pressures and harsh environments.

Lastly, REAXIS®C154P switches things up by blending stannous chloride dihydrate with polypropylene. This blend leads to an enhanced, stable, and free-flowing stannous tin with a high metal content. It acts as a catalyst  in multiple reactions, all of which contribute to the effective crosslinking of thermoplastic elastomers. The final product is a highly durable and versatile thermoplastic vulcanizate, capable of withstanding an array of challenging applications.
