Bismuth: A Viable Alternative to Organotins in Catalyzing  Polyurethanes

When searching out alternatives to organotin catalysts for polyurethanes, bismuth based catalysts have shown to give similar reactivity while having a better toxicity profile.[1] For example,  bismuth catalysts, such as Bismuth Neodecanoates and Bismuth Octoates, are known for their low toxicity and efficacy, enabling the production of safer and environmentally-friendly products[2]. Furthermore, these compounds can effectively accelerate curing reactions, such as those involved in the manufacturing of forms, elastomers, coatings, adhesives, and sealants.[3]

Bismuth Neodecanoate & Bismuth Octoate

Bismuth Neodecanoate and Bismuth Octoate are most commonly used  as catalysts in the formulation of polyurethane foams, elastomers, coatings, adhesives, and sealants.

Bismuth Neodecanoate, with the standard blend of REAXIS®C3208 in addition to low viscosity blends REAXIS®C3209 and REAXIS®C716LV,  and Bismuth Octoate, also known as REAXIS®C3210, are commonly used for their performance in the formulation of rigid polyurethane foams, elastomers, coatings and adhesives and sealants. These products accelerate the gelling reactions, contributing to the end product’s hardness, density, and overall structure. For example in foams, their high reactivity facilitates the formulation of foams with exceptional insulation properties and low-temperature resilience, making it an optimal choice for the automotive and building industries. Reaxis also offers various blends with zinc, including  REAXIS®C708 and REAXIS®C717.

Other Bismuth Catalysts

In addition to the various blends of Bismuth Octoate and Bismuth Neodecanoate, Reaxis offers unique blends of water-soluble bismuth solutions for solventborne polyurethane-based formulations. These options include REAXIS®C739E50, REAXIS®C739P50, and REAXIS®C739W50, all of which are sold in a blend of 50% active catalyst, the difference between them being what this catalyst is mixed with, either ethylene glycol, polyethylene glycol, or water. All of these products exhibit high selectivity for NCO/OH reactions, which improves physical property development.

If you’re not sure which of these bismuth compounds best suits your needs, contact us or request specialty chemical samples on each of these products’ respective pages.
