REAXIS® C233 (Dibutyl Tin Diacetate), also commonly known as dibutyltin diacetate or DBTA, is a butyl-based organotin with a carboxylate functionality. REAXIS® C233 is a highly reactive neat liquid butyl tin given its high tin content (33%) and related small ligand. DBTA REAXIS® C233 contains the highest concentration of all liquid butyl tin products of the tin (IV) family of organotins. Similar products to DBTA include REAXIS® C218 (Dibutyltin Dilaurate), REAXIS® C317 (Dibutyltin bis-(2-ethylhexyl maleate), and REAXIS® C221 (Dibutyltin Dineodecanoate). The octyl-based organotin analog of REAXIS® C233 is REAXIS® C228 (Dioctyltin Diacetate).

REAXIS® C233 and its alternatives can be used as a homogenous tin catalyst in a wide spectrum of polyurethane and silicone applications including adhesives and sealants, elastomers and plastics, and coatings. Silicone-based applications include: acetoxy-, ethoxy- and oxime-based Room Temperature Vulcanizing (RTV) adhesives and sealants, polyethylene crosslinked silanes (PEX), and select silane modified polymers (SMPs). In regard to polyurethane applications, REAXIS® C233 can be used for most related applications including coatings, adhesives and sealants, elastomers, and foams. REAXIS® C233 is on a broad range of international regulatory lists and is thus an ideal candidate for global formulation development.
Given its high tin content, liquid form, small ligand, and good compatibility with a wide range of raw materials REAXIS® C233 tends to be a highly reactive catalyst across a broad range of silicone and polyurethane formulations. In regard to silicone reactions, REAXIS® C233, like all tin-based catalysts, will catalyze the silanol/silane condensation reaction thus acting as both a polymerization and crosslinking catalyst. REAXIS® C233 is used in polyurethane coating formulations where “snap cure” is desired. As a polyurethane catalyst, REAXIS® C233, will preferentially catalyze the urethane reaction and to a lesser extent the water reaction, thus it functions as a polymerization/gelation catalyst. Reactivity-wise, REAXIS® C325 (Dimethyltin Dineodecanoate) would be similar.
Packaging
Storage
REAXIS® C233 should be stored in the original packaging at moderate temperatures and kept from freezing. The container should be closed tightly after each use to maximize shelf life. Characteristic of most Sn (IV) organotins, the primary cause of instability would be hydrolysis. Hydrolysis results in the formation of tin oxide insolubles leading to deactivation of REAXIS® C233.
