Reaxis®  C739W50

REAXIS® C739W50 is a proprietary bismuth catalyst that is primarily used in polyurethane applications. As a bismuth catalyst, REAXIS® C739W50 is unique in that it is both non-carboxylate and water soluble, which differentiates it from the more common bismuth carboxylates such as REAXIS® C716 (Bismuth Neodecanoate) and REAXIS® C3210 (Bismuth Octoate). REAXIS® C739W50 is provided as a 50% active bismuth catalyst in 50% water. Its main use is in waterborne formulation. REAXIS® C739W50 can be provided in a wide range of alternative non-aqueous diluents such as ethylene glycol and PEG, and can be offered as REAXIS® C739E50 and REAXIS® C739P50, respectively. REAXIS® C739W50 is present on the US TSCA chemical inventory.

Applications

Like most bismuth-based products, REAXIS® C739W50 is commonly used in polyurethane applications. It is used in a wide range of polyurethane applications including coatings, adhesives and sealants, elastomers, foams, and plastics. REAXIS® C739W50 is used in applications where toxicity (when compared with organotins), water solubility and shelf-life issues are priorities. and are paramount. In addition to use as a polyurethane catalyst, REAXIS® C739W50 is ideal for water-based lubricant formulations.

Reactivity

Although REAXIS® C739W50 has a different chemical make-up compared to the traditional bismuth carboxylates, it does exhibit a similar, bismuth-like reactivity profile. The use of REAXIS® C739W50 as a polyurethane catalyst results in good overall reactivity. A well-balanced cure is achievable, given the presence of both a lower bismuth metal content and ligand characteristics. Thus, a balanced front-end/pot-life and back-end/ final cure reactivity profile can be achieved through the use of this bismuth catalyst. Reactivity, especially in regard to back-end cure, is greatly improved with the addition of added and exothermically generated heat. Typical of the bismuth catalysts in general, REAXIS® C739W50 will catalyze most polyurethanes reactions and is somewhat similar in reactivity to tin-based catalysts; it is primarily selective toward the polyol-isocyanate and water-isocyanate reactions. In addition to its enhanced water stability, REAXIS® C739W50 will impart a longer polyol-side shelf-life compared to bismuth carboxylates.

Package & Storage

Packaging

  • 44 lb (20 kg) plastic pail
  • 440 lb (200 kg) drums

Storage

REAXIS® C739W50 should be stored in the original packaging at moderate temperatures and kept from freezing. The container should be closed tightly after each use to maximize shelf life.
